Purple Lich Bust

A 3D printed3D printing is the construction of physical objects from a digital 3D model file, using a machine called a 3D printer. Lich bust painted with heavy lighting effects.

This mini was 3D printed on my Anycubic Photon S with Anycubic UV resin.

This was my first real attempt at two things: zenithal highlightingZenithal highlighting the technique of base coating a miniature black, then spraying white paint from above, in order to give an aproximation of sunlight creating shadows and highlights. and object-source LightingObject source lighting, or OSL, is the technique of strategically placing color highlights to give the impression that the miniature is either lit by a light source or is itself emitting light.. I used these two techniques to give a moonlight effect from the back of the lich, and a purple magic glow from the front of the lich, as if he’s standing in front of some purple magic at night.

To start off I primed the bust black. Technically, I didn’t have black primer, so I primed in grey then painted the whole thing black. Then I sprayed light grey primer from above and behind (for the moonlight effect). Finally I sprayed the light-grey primer from below on the front, as if the magical glow is coming from an object in front of the lich.

Next I dry-brushedDry-brushing is the technique of wiping most of the paint off your brush and lightly brushing a miniature, in order to only catch the raised edges with a light dusting of a highlight color. white to get the hardest highlights. I used a combination of blue and violet inks and Vallejo Glaze Medium, to color the mini; purple magic in the front and blue moonlight in back.

Overall, I think the effect worked more or less how I expected. It’s especially good considering I used a spray can instead of an airbrush and dry-brushing instead of more accurate techniques like glazingGlazing is the technique of using very diluted paint in order to tint a miniature with a certain color. Glazing can be applied in layers to create smooth transitions between bolors. or layeringLayering is the technique of creating a smooth blend between colors by using multiple layers slightly thinned paint and shrinking each layer to create a smooth transition between colors..
